What is a Gambit? A gambit is a chess opening in which the black or white player sacrifices material at the beginning of the game. Usually, a player plays a gambit to gain an advantage in the game. This could be time, development, space, central control, weaknesses etc.
Some good examples of gambits include: Evan's Gambit (1. e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.b4)
Queen's Gambit (1.d4 d5 2. c4)
Albin Counter-gambit (1.d4 d5 2.c4 e5)
